Bush to Admit “Addiction to Oil” in State of the Union Speech

That’s what BBC TV news is saying will be a shocking admission by the president when he goes on air tonight in the US to speak to the nation.

Obviously, most of the US and the world already knows about America’s addiction. But for Bush, a dyed in the wool oil industry supporter to say such a thing suggests either a Road to Damascus moment or some shrewd populist politicking in a week when ExxonMobil announced profits of $10 billion. You decide.

  1. Perhaps, even spin-doctors can help us heal.

It’s not easy but I remain WIDE AWAKE in America and therefore, Mr. Yeoman, I agree.

Bush has either had a second term epiphany (now that he doesn’t need the oil campaign loot) or this is a rather telling and bold move by a cornered us propaganda machine.

It is unlikely that Bush’s call for a move away from a gluttonous “US oil addiction” will result in the kind of alternative energy research and funding necessary for us to kick the habit, but here’s to hoping.

In America big business political puppeteers spend millions trying to
transform us from citizens to consumers. The propaganda machine is strong, well connected, and well funded.

For that reason, whether or not Bush will make good on his word is somewhat irrelevant.

He did something very important already.

He said, “I agree with Americans who understand being hooked on foreign oil as an economic problem and a natural security problem,”

In my opinion, Bush has effectively shifted right wing neo-con America’s thinking towards conservation with this endorsement!

Translation - finding alternative energy solutions is now a matter of national security.

Thank you, Mr. Bush. You have now effectively linked alternative energy to being a patriot!

Conservation is no longer just for the left… everyone can do it!

It may seem ridiculous to the rest of the world, as it seems to those wide awake in America, because this all seems so intuitive, but this is the beginning of what it will take to see a transformation that will ripple through the rest of the world.

As I read his speeches it seemed so offensive to me as a world citizen that Bush would not be motivated to these statements for reasons of preserving the earth we all share, but if it takes his understanding of national security to bring us to that place.. I am thankful, nonetheless.

America is a beautiful country filled with big hearted people who like the rest of world, get sick sometimes and need some medical advise to get well.

And though you can’t trust a spin-doctor, I’m praying that if part of being a patriot is finding alternative energy solutions a shift in consciousness will trigger a rapid recovery from a dangerous over-consumption and an uncharacteristic lack of creativity by my beloved American brothers and sisters. We the people of America have more power than we are lead to believe.

I pray this helps us all, even with the spin.
